Marquette Volleyball Continues Non-League Play

TOURNEY INFO - The Marquette University volleyball team continues non-league play this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 19-20) when it takes part in the Wingate INNvitational. Joining the Golden Eagles in the tourney are Gonzaga, Wyoming and host Montana State. Marquette opens play against Gonzaga on Friday evening (6:00 p.m., CST) before meeting Wyoming and Montana State on Saturday.
THE COACHES - Marquette is directed by second-year head coach Pati Rolf (North Dakota State, '92). Heading into the weekend, Rolf has a 16-year career won-lost slate of 325-192 including a 15-23 effort at Marquette. Before arriving at Marquette, Rolf enjoyed a successful 14-year career at Minnesota Duluth where she compiled a 310-169 won-lost slate.
Gonzaga Head Coach Kip Yoshimura (Long Beach State, '90) is in his second season at the helm of the Bulldogs' program. In 11 years of head coaching, Yoshimura has compiled a career won-lost ledger of 256-104.
Jim Barnes (McNeese State, '94) is in his second year in charge of the Wyoming program. Heading into a Thursday night match against Montana, Barnes had a school record of 27-14. In eight years as a college head coach, Barnes sported a career effort of 155-85. Montana State's Miya Malauulu (Oregon State, '98) is in her first year as a head coach. Prior to her current post, she served as an assistant coach at Montana State for five seasons.
THE RECORDS -- Marquette enters the Wingate INNvittaional with an overall record of 2-7. The Golden Eagles captured one match in the Holiday Inn City Centre Challenge last weekend in Milwaukee. Marquette opened the tourney with a four-game triumph over Bradley before dropping a four-game set to eventual champ Ohio and a three-game decision to No. 23 Missouri.
Gonzaga will meet Marquette with a record of 1-8 and will be looking to snap an six-match winless streak.
Wyoming takes a 7-3 showing into its Thursday night encounter against Montana. The Cowgirls won two of three matches last weekend at the Jacksonville University Classic last weekend, defeating Jacksonville and Baylor before losing to Florida International.
Montana State will enter the tourney with wins in its last five matches that has upped its record to 7-2.
COUGHLIN EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS -- Sophomore Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) earned all-tournament honors for the third straight weekend following her performance at the Holiday Inn City Centre Challenge. Coughlin recorded 36 attacks, 19 digs and eight blocks in the three matches. She totaled 16 kills and hit 38.7 percent in the four-game win over Bradley. Through matches played Sept. 17, the outside hitter leads the team and ranks ninth among C-USA players in kills with a 3.85 per-game average.
NOTES - Junior Erica Heisser's (Grand Rapids, Mich.) 52.4 attack percentage (12-1--21) against Ohio University last weekend represented a career best for her and is the high mark by a Marquette player this season ... Senior Ann Lopata's (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) 41.7 hitting percentage (13-3--24) against Bradley was her second-highest career total -- she hit 42.3 percent against Indiana in 2000 ... Senior Gemma Greer (Winfield, Ill.) posted a career-best 17 digs in the Ohio match ... Heisser was a defensive presence at the net for Marquette last weekend, registering 15 blocks over 11 games ... Through matches played Sept. 17, Heisser stands 10th among C-USA players in blocks (1.00 bpg) ... Junior Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) paces the team with a 3.61 digs per-game effort, good for fifth place in C-USA, and is 14 shy of reaching 700 in her career.
