For the second straight week, Marquette women's soccer team will have three matches in a short span. Last week, MU went 2-1 in its three-match series. This week, the Golden Eagles open up a similar stretch on Wednesday, Sept. 24 taking on Wis.-Milwaukee at Engelmann Field at 4 p.m. MU also travels to TCU on Friday, Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. and visits Memphis on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.
The Golden Eagles started C-USA play last week, going 1-1. They will continue league action with the visits to TCU and Memphis.
Scouting Wis.-Milwaukee
Wis.-Milwaukee has been the epitome of a struggling team in 2003. While the Panthers are 1-0 in Horizon League play, that one win is the only win of the season for UWM. It was a 1-0 victory over Butler. The goal against Butler is the only goal the Panthers have on the year as the season nears the halfway point. The 1-5-1 Panthers are led by goal keepers Kerri St. Aubin and Molly Schneider, who have combined for a respectable 1.38 goals against average.
Series History
Wis.-Milwaukee leads, 4-3-3.
The teams played to a 1-1 tie last season at the Valley.
Scouting TCU
The 3-4-1 Horned Frogs picked up its biggest win as a Conference USA member to open the league slate. TCU beat league favorite Cincinnati, 2-1. A 2-0 loss to DePaul followed, but the Frogs proved they can battle in this league. Amy Van Zandt has four goals on the year, two of which came against Cincinnati.
Series History
Marquette leads, 2-0.
MU owns 3-0 and 2-0 wins in the series.
Scouting Memphis
The Golden Eagles have never lost to Memphis. However, last year's contest was the closest in series history. Memphis held a lead on Cincinnati, but lost as it fell to 1-4-3, 0-1-1 in league play. Memphis has its troubles on defense, allowing nearly two goals per match, but keeper Amy Clune has corrected some of that. She owns a 1.06 goals against average. Yuiko Konno leads the team with four goals.
Series History
Marquette leads, 8-0.
Marquette beat Memphis, 3-2, last season.
In The Polls
Marquette fell one spot in the NSCAA Great Lakes regional ranking, coming in eighth. MU is ranked 10th in the Great Lakes region by Soccer Buzz, holding steady. Notre Dame tops the regional rankings in both polls. MU's next nationally ranked opponent comes Nov. 5 when it takes on 12th ranked California
Loughrin has Big Week
Freshman forward Alison Loughrin (Appleton, Wis.) has made her mark on Marquette women's soccer. She scored two of Marquette's three goals during a two game span. She scored tying goals against Wis.-Green Bay and Tulane to mark the first strikes of her college career.
Solid on the Defense
A question mark heading into the year with so many newcomers, the Marquette defense has made its presence felt. Through four matches, Marquette allowed just one goal. This was the fewest goals allowed in program history this late in the year. Marquette allowed two goals through four matches in the 2000 season. Currently, MU is allowing 0.83 goals per match.
Klopp Strikes Again
Senior forward Carolyn Klopp (Glendale, Wis.) became MU's first multi-goal scorer of the season when she struck the first goal against Oakland. Klopp also scored against Vanderbilt and provided the match winner in both. Klopp already has tied her second best goal scoring season when she had two last year. She's on pace to set a career season best. She had four goals in the 2000 season, her freshman year.
Tournament Title Winners
After a second place finish in the Milwaukee Cup, Marquette won the Nike Michigan Invitational, which had a strong field. MU tied with 15th-ranked USC, 0-0. and won the tournament with its 2-0 win over Oakland. MU won the tournament on goal differential. USC defeated Michigan by one goal and was also 1-0-1 in the tourney, but MU had a +2 goal differential.
Bissen Pitches Shutout in First Start
Senior goalkeeper Katie Bissen (Maple Grove, Minn.) made three saves and more importantly kept Vanderbilt off the scoreboard in a 1-0 win on Aug. 29, her first career start. Bissen became just the second keeper in Marquette women's soccer history to record such a feat. Ashleigh Koenig was the first player to do so, shutting out Charlotte on Oct. 1, 2000.
Tough Schedule
Marquette's 2003 slate proves that its not afraid to face anyone. A year removed from playing a no. 1 team, Marquette three teams on its schedule that were ranked or received votes in the preseason NSCAA poll - California (18), Southern California (19) and Charlotte (ARV). In the Soccer Buzz poll, Marquette takes on four teams that are ranked - Charlotte (18), California (22), Cincinnati (23) and Southern California (ARV).
Preseason All C-USA Selections
Two Marquette players were selected among the 11 chosen to be Preseason All C-USA. Seniors Anne Ioder (Hartland, Wis.) and Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) were picked among the league's elite players. Jensen was third team All C-USA last year and first team each of her first two-years. She is coming off a one goal, three assist year as a central midfielder. Ioder was selected second-team all-league each of the last two years. She was a C-USA all-freshman selection as well. She is coming off a two goal, two assist year.
