MILWAUKEE - Marquette offered a feverish comeback after being down 2-0 to Wis.-Milwaukee in women's soccer, but the Panthers were able to prevail in overtime, 3-2.
After trailing at the half by two, Marquette (4-4-1) scored a pair of goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half to draw even. Sophomore forward Julie Thompson scored MU's first just 1:09 after halftime pushing home a lose ball in front of the goal. Senior forward Anne Ioder played the ball to Thompson.
Freshman forward Beth McGill got Marquette even in the 57th minute. She flicked a ball from two yards out past UWM keeper Molly Schneider. The goal was set up on a corner kick that was delivered from senior midfielder Kristen Jensen to Ioder who shot. McGill deflected the ball for the equalizing goal.
"I thought that we played well throughout the match," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We just weren't rewarded for our efforts today. We had enough opportunities and we took advantage of some in the second half with our remarkable comeback."
However, it was not to be enough as UWM (2-5-1) settled down and sent the match to overtime. In the 96th minute, the Panthers scored the match winner when Schneider fed a long distribution down the right side to Elizabeth Chudy. Chudy led Evann Franklin to the corner, and she returned it to Chudy who placed the 12-yard blast past a helpless Katie Bissen, the Marquette goalkeeper.
Bissen essentially had little chance to stop all three UWM goals. Ginny Graczyk scored UWM's first in the 37th minute on a free kick from 24 yards in which she bent around the Marquette wall and into the upper right corner. Franklin scored the Panthers' second goal in the 42nd minute, finding a lose ball five yards in front of the net.
"It was an entertaining match," Roeders added. "We didn't deserve to lose and I think everyone that watched today went away with the same impression. It's disappointing that we let two goals in on set plays in the first half. You have to give them credit for the last goal. It was a great finish."
The Golden Eagles have little time to reflect on the loss. Marquette plays TCU on Friday, Sept. 26 in Fort Worth, Texas, at 4 p.m.
