FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU forward Amy Van Zandt took advantage of an opportunity and Horned Frog goal keeper Katie Buchannan got her second shutout of the season as TCU (4-4-1, 2-1 C-USA) beat Marquette (4-5-1, 1-2 C-USA), 1-0.
Van Zandt scored her fifth goal of the season after taking advantage of a Marquette defensive mistake in the 40th minute. The Golden Eagles couldn't successfully clear the cross from TCU midfielder Cara Toulouse and Van Zandt made the Golden Eagles pay.
"It was an unfortunate situation where we just didn't clear the ball well," head coach Markus Roeders said. "It's disappointing for us because we keep playing well, we're just not getting goals."
The Golden Eagles were forced to play from behind for the entire second half, something they did well on Wednesday when rallying to tie Wis.-Milwaukee after owning a two-goal disadvantage. However, the TCU defense packed it in, limited Marquette to just five second half shots and played the ball out of trouble as often as it could to hang on for the win.
"We put a lot of pressure on them in the second half," Roeders added. "We did a good job of trying to come back, but we can't keep playing catchup. It's tough for any team to come from behind, but we're a young team struggling to score goals."
Marquette did have a significant opportunity to draw even in the second half. Ashley George had a shot that hit the crossbar, but MU couldn't manage to find the net. Buchannan made two saves for the Frogs. MU keeper Katie Bissen stopped three TCU shots.
Marquette looks to end its two match losing streak when it plays Memphis on Sunday, Sept. 28 in Memphis, Tenn., at 2 p.m.
