Women's Soccer Shuts Out Oakland, 2-0

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Marquette junior goalkeeper Katie Bissen made two saves and picked up her third shutout of the year as the Golden Eagles (2-1-1) blanked Oakland (2-1-1) 2-0 to win the Nike Michigan Invitational. MU claimed the title on a plus-two goal differential after tying 15th-ranked USC on Friday, 0-0.

"We played a very nice game today," head coach Markus Roeders said. "Overall, it was a good effort and a lot of players came through today. In fact, we got everyone in, at least for a few minutes."

Senior forward Carolyn Klopp scored her second goal and second match winner of the season in the 20th minute. He blast to the left of Oakland Keeper Sarah Buckland gave MU the 1-0 lead. Klopp's strike was the first goal Oakland has allowed all season.

Freshman midfielder Michelle Martin scored her first career goal in the 52nd minute. Junior defender Claire Weber and senior midfielder Kristen Jensen fed Martin who one-timed MU's second score.

Bissen played all but one minute of the match as she led Marquette to its third shutout of the season. Bissen has allowed just one goal - a penalty kick against Dayton - all season, lowering her goals against average total to 0.24.

"Again, it was an excellent defensive effort," Roeders added. "We played very good soccer and played very consistent for the whole 90 minutes."

Marquette plays Wisconsin on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Madison, Wis.
