Men's Basketball Falls to Cincinnati

Four Golden Eagles scoring in double figures were not enough for Marquette (11-3, 2-1 in C-USA) to knock off seventh ranked Cincinnati (12-0, 3-0) Wednesday night at the Bradley Center. Cincinnati used a 12-4 run to close the first half, and survived several Marquette uprisings to hold on 85-73.
Travis Diener led Marquette and all scorers with 19 points. Steve Novak (17), Scott Merritt (16) and Dameon Mason (13) rounded out the double-figure scoring for Golden Eagles. Novak and Merritt also led the frontcourt on the boards, as they grabbed seven and six rebounds, respectively.
The physical game saw Cincinnati hold the advantage in rebounds, 37-to-28. The teams combined for 59 fouls, which led to 66 attempted free throws. Marquette made 23-of-28, shooting 82.1 percent including 95.0 percent in the second half of 19-20. Cincinnati, meanwhile also made 23 free throws, but on 38 attempts, for 60.5 percent.
The Bearcats featured five players scoring in double figures, led by Tony Bobbitt?s 18 points off the bench. Eric Hicks also came off the bench to notch a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Marquette is back in action Friday night, when they travel to Green Bay for a neutral site C-USA match-up against the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. Tip-off at the Resch Center is slated for 7 p.m.
