MILWAUKEE ? The Marquette women's basketball team (14-4, 4-1) used its size on the inside to defeat Tulane (7-10, 0-4), 69-55, and extend its home win streak to seven.
The Golden Eagles scored 28 points in the paint and held the Green Wave to only 16 total inside points.
"We were really focusing on post play tonight," coach Terri Mitchell said. "It wasn't the prettiest game, but we found a way to step up and ended up having four players scoring in double figures."
Senior guard Katie O'Grady led the team, scoring 17 points, nine coming in the first half.
"I took a real attacking mentality because they were pressing so I tried to attack the basket and hit the open shot," O?Grady said. "They were giving us the inside and we were taking full opportunity of that."
Marquette took the lead five minutes into the first half and maintained it throughout the game.
Three other players scored in double figures for the Golden Eagles. Kelly Schwerman added 14, while Danielle Kamm and Christina Quaye contributed 10. Schwerman was perfect from the line, hitting 12-of-12, coming two short of tying the school record.
Turnovers were a factor for Tulane, five turnovers in four minutes caused Tulane to struggle on offense early, something that Marquette quickly took advantage of.
The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the second half, and capitalized on the Green Waves foul trouble, scoring 18 second half points from the free throw line.
Delacey Joseph led Tulane with 15 points and five rebounds.
Marquette?s next game comes on Sunday, January 25, when it takes on Southern Miss at the 2 p.m. At the Al McGuire Center.
