MILWAUKEE ? Cincinnati got off to a hot start and defeated Marquette, 3-0 (30-14, 31-29, 30-28). The match was the Conference USA opener for both teams. Marquette, who was riding a three-match winning streak, falls to 9-4 and 0-1 in C-USA play. Cincinnati improves to 8-6 and 1-0.
The Bearcats rattled out to a 5-1 start and limited Marquette to nine kills in the first game as Cincinnati rolled to a 30-14 win. Cincinnati?s offense was solid in the first game, hitting 34.4 percent. Marquette hit -2.9 percent in the game.
?Their offense did a great job of attacking and keeping us off guard. Our hitting percentage reflects that,? head coach Pati Rolf said. ?Our youth showed, tonight. They kept attacking and our young players had a hard time responding.?
Marquette played tough in game two. Cincinnati was up 28-25, but Marquette rallied to force the game to go beyond its normal limits. However, Cincinnati righted itself to claim the closest game in the contest.
Game three was again tightly contested. However, Marquette rallied from down 26-20 to close the game to a two point Cincinnati advantage, but the Bearcats responded to claim the match win.
?They pressed us hard tonight,? Rolf added. ?They are a scrappy team. That?s the beauty of playing good teams. We just have to bounce back tomorrow against a very good Louisville team.?
Junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin led Marquette with 15 kills. Senior Libero Erin Freer had 13 digs. Julie DuPont led all players with 16 kills for cincinnati. Noel Olsen had 32 assists.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 against 21st ranked Louisville at the Al McGuire Center at 7 p.m.
