BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Marquette allowed just 52 points as the Golden Eagles (13-5, 3-2 C-USA) defeated UAB, 3-0 (30-15, 30-18, 30-19). Marquette has won its last four matches and is on its longest winning streak of the season.
Marquette was led by sophomore outside hitter Jamie Mueller, who had 14 kills and 30 total attacks. Additionally, Mueller hit 36.7 percent, leading Marquette in that category. Senior setter Sarah Vernon had 37 assists for the Golden Eagles.
?This was possibly the best match we?ve played in my three years at Marquette,? head coach Pati Rolf said. ?Everyone played well, and it was a very balanced effort tonight.?
In game one, Marquette hit 35.5 percent, as it recorded 15 kills and 31 total attacks for the 30-15 victory. Senior middle blocker Erica Heisser and Mueller each had four kills, with Heisser recording four blocks in the game, which was never in doubt for Marquette.
The Golden Eagles took game two, 30-18, blasting 21 kills for the game. Mueller again led the Golden Eagles with six kills and 11 total attacks in the game.
The Blazers had their best-hitting game in game three, but never really challenged Marquette, 30-19. UAB recorded 11 kills, but Marquette?s accuracy proved too much for UAB, as it hit 34.0 percent. Junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin had five kills Marquette.
Mueller?s 14 kills led a balanced Marquette attack. Freshman outside hitter Kimberley Todd had 10 kills after registering a career-best 24 in Marquette?s previous match. Every Marquette attacker hit above 20.0 percent. Everyone saw action as well as the fate of each game was never in doubt.
Isabel Oquendo?s 13 kills was the best total for UAB (1-17, 0-6 C-USA).
Marquette returns home to take on Houston at 7 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center on Friday, Oct. 22.
