MILWAUKEE ? Despite 12 kills from junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin and 11 from senior middle blocker Erica Heisser, Marquette lost to no. 21 Louisville, 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-26). Louisville improves to 11-2 and 2-0 in C-USA action. Marquette falls to 9-5 and 0-2 in Conference USA play.
Louisville?s Svetlana Dukule had 19 kills to lead all players and the Cardinals? Candace Coga had 15 digs to lead all players. Senior Libero Erin Freer had 12 digs for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette held an early advantage in game one, jumping out to a 12-10 lead. Thanks to six game one kills by Coughlin, three of which came in that early span, Marquette held the early advantage. However, Louisville?s accuracy proved to cause Marquette problems. The Cardinals rallied on a 10-1 run to take a seven point lead and hold off Marquette. Louisville hit 47.1 percent in the first game, committing just four errors.
Contrary to game one, it was Louisville that jumped to the early game two lead, 11-5. Marquette clawed back to cut the match to one on another Coughlin kill, but Louisville pulled yet another run, this one being 8-1, to take a commanding lead and pull out the second game.
Game three was close until the final points. Marquette and Louisville were tied at 19 before Louisville jumped to a 23-19 lead and eventually extended its lead to four on the match?s final play. Louisville hit 33.3 percent for the match and held Marquette to a 13.8 percent efficiency. Louisville controlled play at the net, blocking 11 Marquette attacks.
?We improved our hitting from last night. Jenn Brown hit well as did Erica Heisser,? head coach Pati Rolf said. ?Louisville is tough. But this is the type of competition that makes us better. By game three we were matching up well. We just need to start earlier. This is the type of environment we want to have with the fans and the type of volleyball that is played.?
Marquette set a school record for attendance with 733.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Wis.-Green Bay at 7 p.m.
