MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Heather Goranson's goal was all the Marquette (9-6-1, 5-2-1) women's soccer team needed to secure a road win against Memphis (10-6-0, 4-4-0) tonight.
Marquette used a solid defensive performance tonight, limiting Memphis' opportunities. The win was Marquette's third straight.
"Defensively, this was probably our best game of the season," said head coach Markus Roeders. "We were very sound. They had very few opportunities, especially in the second half."
Goranson's goal came at 19:28 on a cross from Julie Thompson. Goranson was able to slip in between the defense and took a pass from Thompson in the box with her back toward Memphis keeper Isabel Briones. She turned around after receiving the pass and then beat Briones one-on-one. It was Goranson's third goal of the season
Marquette goalkeeper Katie Bisen recorded two saves in her sixth shutout of this season.
"Memphis is a very talented team," added Roeders. "To come down here and get a win is great. We are very pleased tonight, we took away a lot of positives from the win."
Marquette will return to Valley Fields to take on Tulane on Sunday at 1 p.m.
