MILWAUKEE ? Marquette shut down TCU?s potent offensive attack and claimed a 3-0 (30-24, 30-20, 30-22) win. The Golden Eagles defense proved to be the difference as Marquette dug 58 TCU attacks, led by a match high 18 from senior Libero Erin Freer.
?Erin Freer showed what she?s made of tonight, running the defense,? head coach Pati Rolf said. ?There was great communication in the back line and that?s the kind of defense we?re going to need.
Marquette survived three ties in game one to take a six-point victory in the first game. The Golden Eagles were led by four separate players with four kills. Marquette closed out the first game strong, sophomore outside hitter Jamie Mueller had two of her four kills in the final 9-4 run to close out the game.
Using a big lead, Marquette took a 10-point win in the second. Marquette?s floor defense was key to the win. Caitie O?Brien had four of Marquette?s 17 digs in the game as the Golden Eagles held TCU to a -4.2 attack percentage. Marquette?s net defense was also strong in game two, recording seven blocks, four by junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin.
The Golden Eagles cruised to an eight point win in game three. Marquette finished the night with 13 blocks and a balanced offensive effort. MU?s leading attacker was senior middle blocker Erica Heisser with nine kills.
?We showed we?re a strong blocking team this weekend,? Rolf added.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, Oct. 29 at Memphis.
