MILWAUKEE - Heather Goranson's goal at 98:14 gave the Marquette (10-6-1, 6-2-1) women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Tulane (6-10-2, 3-5-1)this afternoon. It was Marquette's fourth-straight win.
"I think we are starting to peak at the right time," said head coach Markus Roeders. "Defensively we are playing well, we are playing organized. Offensively, we are creating opportunities. Give some credit to Tulane, we had a lot of opportunities today and they did a good job of stopping us. We may have started a little slow (today), but ultimately we prevailed."
Marquette outshot Tulane 24-6 in today's match and controlled throughout. Goranson's goal came after she carried the ball from midfield and found Meghan Connelly left of the goal. Goranson broke for the goal after the pass and Connely found her ten yards from the goal to set up the game-winner. Goranson scored the game-winner in Friday nights victory as well and now has four goals on the season.
"The whole game we put forth a very good effort," said Goranson. "We had some close chances early, anybody could have put the ball in for us. I think the team is stepping it up big time when it matters most. I hope we can keep this momentum going into the conference tournament and do well there."
With the win Marquette, secured a spot in the Conference USA Tournament that begins Nov. 3 in St. Louis. Marquette also recorded its tenth win of the season giving the Golden Eagles nine straight seasons with ten or more wins.
Goalkeeper Katie Bissen recorded her second straight shutout and had four saves. Bissen now has six shutouts on the season.
Marquette will conclude its regular-season home slate with a Wednesday match against state-rival Wisconsin. Action at Valley Fields begins at 7 p.m.
