Vernon dishes 44 assists in victory

GREEN BAY, Wis. ? Marquette wasted little time to defeat Wis.-Green Bay, 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-24), at the Phoenix Sports Center in Green Bay, Wis. Junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin led Marquette with 12 kills. Senior setter Sarah Vernon had 44 assists of 52 Marquette kills. Senior Libero Erin Freer had 12 digs.
The Golden Eagles took control of the match early. Marquette (10-5) jumped to a 14-9 lead in the first game. Coughlin had three kills in that run. Freshman outside hitter Kimberley Todd had a pair of kills in that rally as well. UWGB rallied to close the game ton 20-19, but Marquette ran off a 10-7 game ending run. Marquette hit a robust 22.0 percent in the first game. Wis.-Green Bay (4-11) hit a spectacular 32.5 percent, but four service aces by Marquette and four service errors by UWGB cost the Phoenix the game.
Marquette won game two by the same margin as game one. The Golden Eagles made a late 4-1 run to close out the game. Marquette held the largest lead in the frame by either team at 14-11. Marquette was again out hit by the Phoenix. UWGB hit 26.8 percent to Marquette?s 25.6 percent, but four service errors again cost UWGB.
Marquette turned a 15-15 tie to a quick 20-16 advantage in game three, en route to its six point win in the game. Marquette?s defense turned in 23 digs in the game and finally held the Phoenix to a lower attack percentage. Marquette owned that stat in game three, 13.2 percent to 8.3 percent. Coughlin had six of her 12 kills in the third game.
Senior middle blocker Erica Heisser led the Marquette defense with four blocks. UWGB?s Jackie Rosen had 12 kills to lead the Phoenix. Marquette had seven aces in the match, with Vernon, Freer and Heisser each having two.
The Golden Eagles improve to 3-0 on the road. Eight of Marquette?s 10 wins have come in three games.
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Oct. 8 against DePaul at the Al McGuire Center at 7 p.m.
