MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette (6-5-1, 2-1-1) women's soccer team took advantage of crafty passing tonight as the Golden Eagles defeated Cincinnati (2-9-0, 0 -4-0) 5-0 at Valley Fields.
Marquette set the tone early as Kristie Matola found Meghan Connelly just 49 seconds into the game for the first goal.
"Getting out early was just what we needed to get relaxed," said head coach Markus Roeders.
The scoring continued for Marquette as Connelly and Matola found Julie Thompson at 19:02 to give Marquette a 2-0 advantage. Thompson received the ball at the top of the box, dribbled around a defender and blasted a shot past Cincinnati goalkeeper Jennifer Doerflein for the goal.
Just six minutes later Alison Loughrin received a ball on the right wing and was followed closely by a Cincinnati defender who fouled Loughrin inside the penalty area setting up a penalty kick. Heather Goranson's shot caught the upper right corner of the net for the goal.
One of the sweeter displays of teamwork tonight came at 74:04 when Julie Thompson gave a ball to Claire Weber on the right wing about 30 yards from the goal. Weber served the ball into the box and found Michelle Pitzl who got her head on the ball and found the goal.
"We had some great spells tonight," added Roeders. "The goals showed how we can really create from the midfield. Tonight you saw some good things that we are capable of doing."
The final goal came from Maureen Kole at 85:31 on a shot from five yards out. Erin Jamieson was credited with the assist.
The Marquette defense only allowed three shots today and Marquette controlled the ball for most of the game.
The Golden Eagles return to Valley Fields on Sunday to take on Louisville at 1 p.m.
