Heisser leads team with 18 kills in victory

CHARLOTTE ? After a game-one loss, Marquette stormed through the next three games to claim its 19th win of the season, defeating Charlotte, 3-1 (26-30, 30-26, 30-16, 30-26).
Senior middle blocker Erica Heisser led Marquette (19-6, 9-3 C-USA) to the victory. She had a team-high 18 kills and hit 38.1 percent. Freshman middle blocker Jenn Brown had 12 kills in 21 attacks with one error to lead the Marquette attack, hitting 52.4 percent for the night. The Golden Eagles hit 27.2 percent for the match.
Senior Libero Erin Freer continued her strong defensive efforts, logging 25 digs in the contest. Sophomore Caitie O?Brien had 17 digs in the win. Junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin added 15 kills to the Marquette cause. Senior setter Sarah Vernon had her 11th double double of the season with 51 assists and 13 kills.
Charlotte out-killed Marquette in the first game, 21-14, to claim a 30-26 win. Marquette jumped to a 14-10 lead in the first game before Charlotte (18-17, 4-8 C-USA) went on a 5-0 run to take its first lead in the game since 3-0. The teams exchanged points before a 3-0 run by Charlotte at 23-23. That three point advantage was enough for the 49ers to put a scare into Marquette.
Charlotte jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the second game and it appeared that the 49ers were in a comfortable position. Marquette scored the next five points to make it 15-12. Vernon had two kills in that run, but it didn?t stop there. Marquette went on a 9-2 run to take a 21-19 lead. Vernon paced Marquette with six kills in the game and fed Coughlin, who had six kills in the game, down the stretch. Coughlin?s two kills after a 25-25 tie helped Marquette to the game victory.
Marquette was dominant in the third game, 30-16. After a 5-5 tie, Marquette won two out of every three points to cruise to the game win. A well-balanced game, including four kills each by Todd, Heisser and Vernon, was key to the game. The Golden Eagles played about as well as a team could offensively, hitting 48.6 percent in the frame. Marquette had 19 kills with just two errors in the third game.
The Golden Eagles continued the hot hitting in the fourth and deciding game, hitting . Marquette never trailed in the fourth game, jumping to a 3-0 lead and eventually increasing it to a 18-9 margin, the largest in the game. The middles ? Heisser and Brown ? had monster games, each recording seven kills. Marquette landed 20 kills in the game.
Marquette is one win away from its first 20 win season in 19 years. Marquette has won 10 of its last 11 contest and are a two-point, five game loss away from winning its last 11.
The Golden Eagles wrap up the regular season on Saturday, November 13 at East Carolina at 7 p.m. EST.
