Marquette never let Wisconsin AAU lead by more than seven points and made a last-minute comeback, but the Golden Eagles fell short in an exhibition loss, 60-55. It was Marquette?s final exhibition game as the Golden Eagles went 1-1 in preseason play. Wisconsin AAU is 2-2 in a five-game exhibition season.
Three Marquette players scored in double figures, led by 12 from sophomore center Christina Quaye. Junior guard Carolyn Kieger scored 11 and sophomore forward Jasmine McCullough added 10 to lead Marquette bench scorers. Anna DeForge, averaging 20.5 points per game coming into the contest, played all 40 minutes and led all scorers with 22 points for Wisconsin AAU.
Marquette?s defense contained the all-star team, holding Wisconsin AAU to a 30.0 shooting percent. The Golden Eagles out-rebounded Wisconsin AAU, 53-45, led by 11 from McCullough.
After Wisconsin AAU led by one at halftime, the teams exchanged the lead 14 times in the final 20 minutes. Marquette built a four-point lead with 6:58 left on a Kieger layup, its largest lead of the second half. Wisconsin AAU took the lead, 51-50, at 3:44 after a three-point field goal by DeForge. That sparked a 10-1 run which put Wisconsin AAU up by a game-high seven points with 1:15 to play.
Four Marquette free throws over the next 14 seconds cut the Wisconsin AAU lead to three. Marquette regained possession with 29 seconds to go with a chance to tie, but a three-point shot by senior guard Lesley Juedes was unsuccessful, and Wisconsin AAU milked the clock until the end of the game.
Marquette jumped out of the gate early, taking an 18-8 lead early on. McCullough scored six of her bench-high 10 points in that early span. Wisconsin AAU responded with a 9-0 run, capped by free throws from former Marquette guard Kelly Schwerman to take a 19-18 lead.
A jumper by junior guard Carolyn Kieger gave Marquette the lead again at 20-18, a lead it would have until the final two seconds of the period. Talia Goudy?s layup with two seconds left in the half gave Wisconsin AAU a 25-24 lead at the break.
