November 3, 2004 - The Al McGuire Center was filled with almost four thousand fans Wednesday night, as many turned out to see the men?s basketball team roll past Lewis University 96-62 in the teams? first exhibition contest.
Senior Travis Diener earned his third pre-season double-double, scoring 29 points and adding 13 assists. Diener scored early and his 20 first half points made him the lone player to reach double-digits before halftime.
?(Travis is the) All-American at the one spot,? coach Tom Crean said. ?He?s one of the most elite guards in America. He really created in the second half for us.?
The Golden Eagles started slowly, trading leads with the Flyers until a lay-up by Chris Grimm with almost 13 minutes left gave Marquette the 21-20 advantage. From there, the Golden Eagles enjoyed a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Marquette?s ability to dominate the defensive boards kept Lewis from scoring off its own misses. The team totaled 57 rebounds, 31 of them defensive. Grimm and Mike Kinsella both earned a team-high eight rebounds.
After going scoreless in the first half, Dameon Mason came out aggressively in the second, connecting on seven of his nine field goal attempts. He finished with 16 points and six rebounds.
?He?s trying to do so much,? Crean said. ?He needs to score for us and create for us. He made a lot of progress tonight. His rebounds were a true indication of what he?s capable of.?
John Loeffelhotz led Lewis with 20 points, and Anthony Scala added 16.
Marquette wraps up the exhibition season against 2003-04 Division III National Champion UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday, November 9th at the Bradley Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
