Seniors Lead Way to Win in Final Home Match

Four players have 10 or more kills
MILWAUKEE ? Marquette defeated Southern Miss, 3-0, in the final home volleyball contest of the season. Junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin led Marquette with 14 kills. Senior setter Sarah Vernon had 46 assists in the Marquette win. Senior Libero Erin Freer had 17 digs for Marquette.
The win was Marquette?s 18th of the season as it improved to 18-6 overall and 8-3 in C-USA play. The 18 wins are the most since the 2001 season. Marquette went 10-4 in its first year in the Al McGuire Center.
After spotting Southern Miss a 5-1 lead in game one, Marquette won 29 of the next 44 points to win going away, 30-18. Coughlin had seven kills and Vernon assisted 19 of Marquette?s 23 attacks. The Golden Eagles hit 27.5 percent for the frame and never trailed in the game after taking a 9-8 lead.
The second game was much closer than the first, with Marquette taking a four-point win. The Golden Eagles benefitted from five service aces, three by Vernon, to take the 2-0 lead. Southern Miss kept the game close with five blocks, three by Nicole Rock, but couldn?t get any closer to Marquette than 25-23.
Marquette dominated in the third game, winning 30-16. Southern Miss couldn?t stop Marquette?s potent offensive attack as it had 21 kills in the game and a 25.9 attack percentage.
Sophomore outside hitter Jamie Mueller had 13 kills for Marquette, recording a double-double with 14 digs. Senior middle blocker Erica Heisser and freshman outside hitter Kimberley Todd also had 10 kills. Marquette?s offense was accurate as it hit 25.9 percent for the night.
Morgon Johnson led Southern Miss (5-20, 0-11 C-USA) with seven kills.
The match marked the final home contest for Marquette seniors Erin Freer, Sarah Vernon and Erica Heisser.
Marquette hits the road for its second-to-last match of the year, visiting Charlotte at 7 p.m. EST on Friday, November 12.
