Senior setter receives third such honor of the year
MILWAUKEE ? Senior setter Sarah Vernon was named Conference USA Setter-of-the-Week, the league office announced. It is Vernon?s third selection as Setter-of-the-Week by the Conference USA office and it is Marquette?s fourth C-USA Player-of-the-Week selection this season.
The senior recorded two more double-doubles this weekend and helped improve the Golden Eagles? overall record to 18-6, the team?s most wins since 2001.
?Sarah has earned this all on her own, she worked hard in 2001-2003 learning from one of the best setters in the conference, Gemma Greer,? head coach Pati Rolf said. ?She never complained and took the time to learn and get better. Now she is leading the conference and is one of the most powerful setters in the country. She continues to improve in all aspects, every weekend, I am so proud of her.?
In a pair of 3-0 wins over Tulane and Southern Miss, Vernon averaged 15.0 assists per game, 3.5 digs per game and 0.83 service aces per game. The senior assisted in extending her team?s win streak to three matches. Vernon had 44 assists and 11 digs against Tulane on Friday, followed by 46 assists and 10 digs against Southern Miss on Saturday. The senior also tallied a career-best tying four service aces against Southern Miss.
For the year, Vernon is averaging 11.96 assists per game and 2.06 kills per game and leads the team with a 29.5 attack percentage. Vernon is sixth in Conference USA in assists per game.
Marquette returns to action on Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. EST against Charlotte in Charlotte, N.C.
