IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, Marquette mounted a comeback effort that came just short, falling to Iowa, 78-72, in Iowa City, Iowa.
Marquette?s comeback began down 69-56 when Danielle Kamm hit a three point basket to kick off a 9-4 Marquette run to close the gap to one. The run ended on a three point basket by junior Carolyn Kieger and a pair of free throws by Christina Quaye. Iowa?s Jenna Armstrong hit a three-pointer with 3:16 to end that run and increase the lead back to four, but Marquette proved that it wouldn?t go away down the stretch closing the gap to four with just over a minute to play.
Marquette cut Iowa?s lead to four, 76-72 with 58 seconds to play on a Kieger jumper. After a free throw by Jenna Armstrong, Marquette lost possession and was forced to foul Stacy Schlapkohl, who made one free throw to extend to the final margin.
?I thought this was a hard fought game,? head coach Terri Mitchell said. ?Our team has a lot of character, we just came up on the short end. This is a difficult place to play and I give a lot of credit to (Iowa coach) Lisa Bluder and what she has done here.?
Kamm led Marquette (5-2) with a career best 18 points. Kieger and Christina Quaye each added 17 for Marquette. Iowa (7-0) was led by Johanna Solverson, who scored a career best 21 points.
?I felt like we got better tonight,? Mitchell said. ?I know that even in defeat, we can get better and be improved for our next game.?
Marquette started out the first half going on a 7-0 run, led by a one of Danielle Kamm?s two three point baskets in the half. Kamm finished with 10 points in the half.
Iowa mounted an early comeback and took a 12-10 lead. Three three point baskets by Solverson sparked Iowa to a 22-18 lead. Marquette eventually tied the score at 24 and traded baskets until a three-point play by Kieger with 3:45 in the half put the Golden Eagles up 32-29. Kieger finished the half with a team best 12 points.
Iowa put the clamps on Marquette defensively at that point and went on a 12-0 run to finish the half, up 41-32. Krista Vande Venter started the run with a pair of layups. Crystal smith concluded the run with a three-point basket. She led Iowa with 10 points at the break.
