MILWAUKEE -- Marquette scored tied a season best with 41 points in the first half freshmen Christina Quaye and Danielle Kamm combined for 28 points to lead Marquette (17-6, 7-4 C-USA) to a 60-57 win over Memphis (17-7, 7-4 C-USA). The win, Marquette?s 17th, is the most for the program since the 1999-2000 season.
The Golden Eagles took little time to take a big lead. Marquette ran out to an 11-2 lead and pulled away late in the first half to lead by 17 at the half, 41-24. Marquette was on fire in the first half, hitting 57.7 percent of its shots (15-of-26). Four players had at least seven points at the break, led by eight from Carolyn Kieger and Jasmine McCullough.
?We took enough out of them in the first half to build the lead that we did,? head coach Terri Mitchell said.
But Memphis turned the tables on Marquette in the second half, putting the pressure on the Golden Eagles with a zone defense. Marquette hit just 28.1 percent in the second half as the Tigers mounted a furious comeback. Down 20 with 16:16 to play, Memphis trimmed Marquette?s lead to three with 52 seconds left.
?I thought our attack was good, but when we started missing shots we got tentative,? Mitchell said. ?It?s easy to focus on the second half and walk out of here and feel bad. We don?t. Our heads our high. That?s a great opponent. But, we finished this game.?
Kamm responded with the biggest of her 13 points with 17 seconds left to extend Marquette?s lead back to five, 60-55. Memphis again had a shot to tie, but Jennifer Sullivan missed a three pointer with seven seconds left as Marquette secured its win.
Quaye scored 15 to lead MU in scoring for the second straight game. Kamm added 13. Senior forward Crystal Weaver set a career high in rebounds for the second straight game, this time with 16.
? I think Christina needs to touch the ball,? Mitchell said. ?If you look at Quaye and Danielle Kamm and Jasmine McCullough, they all had pretty good nights. I know it?s cliche, but they are not freshmen anymore.?
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, February 15 against Saint Louis at 2 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center. That game will air locally on WMLW-Ch. 41.
