Golden Eagles point guard Travis Diener picked up two national honors, Thursday. Diener was named First Team All-District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), making him eligible to receive All-American honors at the conclusion of the season. In addition, Diener was named one of 16 finalists for the inaugural Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award.
Diener, who currently leads the Golden Eagles and Conference USA in both scoring (17.8 ppg) and assists (6.0 apg), has had a fine all-around season. The junior floor captain also leads Marquette in steals (1.27 spg) and three-point percentage (45.9 percent), while maintaining a healthy 2.64 assist-to-turnover ratio (second in C-USA).
The NABC selection represents Diener?s first step towards All-American recognition. Two all-district teams are selected in each of the NABC?s 15 districts by a vote of NABC coaches. The 150 players that receive all-district recognition become eligible for the All-American teams that will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
The Cousy Award, sponsored by the Basketball Hall of Fame, will recognize the best true point guard in all of college basketball (including Divisions II and III).
"Mr. Cousy has a vision for this award," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Hall of Fame. "He wants to recognize the vital importance of the point guard position and highlight its crucial role in achieving team success. This award will recognize core basketball skills such as passing, dribbling and creating team offense in addition to intangibles such as leadership, vision, selflessness and focus."
