The Marquette Women's Volleyball team continued its spring slate at Illinois, in the Networkers Classic Spring Volleyball Tournament.
The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start, knocking off Southern Illinois, 30-17, 30-25, in the first match of the day.
Next up, Marquette faced the tall and powerful China Junior National Team. Sophomore Theresa Coughlin and freshman Jamie Mueller were key contributors at the outside position, and with well-timed attacks from junior setter Sarah Vernon, the Golden Eagles challenged China, only to lose both games by narrow margins.
MU rebounded early in the afternoon, taking the first game against Northwestern before surrendering the second, for a 1-1 split.
That left Marquette with a final match against Auburn. The Golden Eagles stormed out to dominate the first game, and edged out a tough second game, to sweep the Tigers.
The Golden Eagles finished the day with a mark of 5-3. After the competition, Assistant Coach Amy Wagner was pleased with the team's effort, "We had tough competition the entire day that made us adjust our game and think outside the box.? This is the type of competition we need to take this team and program to the next level.? I believe the Lady Golden Eagles will take huge strides next fall if they respond to their opponents as they did the majority of the day at U of I."
