BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? The Marquette women's soccer team continued its exhibition season, playing three contests on Sunday, April 4. The Golden Eagles played well offensively in the three contests, but managed a tie in the three results.
The day started off with a 45-minute match against C-USA foe Louisville. Marquette owned the shooting advantage, 12-4. Louisville pulled out the win in the 44th minute. After a long throw towards the MU goal, the Golden Eagle defense cleared the ball short and a 22-yard shot was placed back toward the Marquette goal for the 1-0 win.
In the second contest of the day, Marquette again dominated the offensive action, owning a 15-2 shot advantage against Miami (Ohio). However, the Redhawks took advantage of a defensive miscue by Marquette in the 10th minute to win, 1-0.
In its final contest, Marquette claimed a 1-1 draw against Indiana in a match played in a pair of 30 minute halves. The Hoosiers owned the majority of offensive action in the first half. Marquette earned a 1-0 advantage in the 53rd minute on a 40-yard free kick. The Hoosiers tied the match with a mark in extra time on a header scored off a set piece from a corner kick. The Golden Eagles open the 2004 regular season with Indiana on Friday, August 27 at 8:15 p.m. at Valley Fields.
For the day, Marquette owned a 35-15 shot advantage against its three opponents.
"Aside from the scores, our overall play continues to improve. When you outshoot the opponents by a 35-15 margin and only manage to score one goal, our focus has to be on finishing opportunities," head coach Markus Roeders said. "Our team defense, especially within the flow off the game, is good, but we have to eliminate mistakes on set plays. The margin of error is slim against good competition and we allowed last-minute goals in two contests. If we eliminate those opportunities, the games turn into our favor. Give the team a lot of credit for their determination, energy and willingness to play at a high level throughout a long day."
Marquette continues its spring play on Sunday April 18 in Madison, Wis. Marquette takes on the three other Division I Wisconsin schools. MU opens with Wis.-Green Bay at 11:15 a.m., takes on Wis.-Milwaukee at 12:30 p.m. and finishes with Wisconsin at 4:15 p.m.
