KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? Senior setter Sarah Vernon proved to be a multiple threat for Marquette as the Golden Eagles defeated Maine, 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-20), in the first match of the Radisson Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich. Vernon was responsible for a part of 49 of Marquette?s 54 kills in the victory.
Vernon logged her third double-double of the season, slamming home a season high 15 kills and adding 34 assists to the Marquette cause. Vernon was also accurate, hitting 62.8 percent for the contest, not missing in her 22 attempts.
Senior outside hitter Erica Heisser was the beneficiary of five of Vernon?s 11 assists in the first game, as the Golden Eagles cruised to a five point win. Marquette had three 3-0 runs and one 4-0 run in the win.
Marquette stepped up its play in game two behind Vernon?s efforts. With nine kills and 22 assists, Vernon controlled the pace of play in the second frame. Marquette rallied from an early deficit with five straight points on the serve of senior Libero Erin Freer.
A pair of kills by Vernon to begin game three started Marquette off on a 5-0 run, and the Golden Eagles never looked back. Marquette hit 46.7 percent in the game, missing just four of 30 attacks, with 18 kills. Freshman outside hitter Kimberley Todd led the way with six of her 10 kills in the game.
Marquette?s defense helped the cause as the Golden Eagles recorded 50 digs, compared to the Blackbears 27. Marquette also had five blocks for the match.
The Golden Eagles improve to 3-1 for the first time since 2002, head coach Pati Rolf?s first season at Marquette. That year, Marquette started 5-1.
Marquette continues its action in the tournament with matches against Rutgers (noon EDT) and Western Michigan (7 p.m. EDT) on Saturday, Sept. 11.
