KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? Marquette rebounded from a loss earlier in the day in the Radisson Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., defeating Western Michigan, the tournament host, 3-1 (30-28, 30-26, 28-30, 30-24). With the win, Marquette improves to 4-2 on the season, while Western Michigan falls to 4-4.
Junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin had a season high 25 kills to lead Marquette to its first four-game victory of the season. Coughlin had 46 kills for the weekend to earn all-tournament team honors. Senior middle blocker Erica Heisser had 13 kills in this match. She came off a season-high 20-kill performance earlier in the day to join Coughlin in earning all-tournament honors.
Marquette?s defense was integral to the win, posting 15 blocks. Freshman middle blocker Jenn Brown had six blocks, four of which were solo, to lead the team.
The Golden Eagles set the pace early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in games. Coughlin had 11 of her 25 in the first two games. After a game three win by Western Michigan, Marquette controlled the pace in game four, picking up the match win. Marquette went on an 11-2 run to take a 22-10 lead and cruise to the four-game win.
The Golden Eagles return home to host its second tournament of the season, beginning Friday, Sept. 17. Marquette hosts Boston College at 7 p.m. on Sept. 17. South Dakota State and Loyola (Ill.) also compete in the tournament.
