Golfers Claim Tourney Title in Season Debut

Golden Eagles win John Piper Intercollegiate
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Marquette posted the best final round total to win the 2004 John Piper Intercollegiate by 11 strokes.
Owning a six shot lead heading into the final round, Marquette shot a 283, five shots better than the rest of the field, to claim its first tournament crown since a win at the Kauai Collegiate Cup in spring of 2003. The Golden Eagles owned the best 18-hole totals in the first and third rounds to cruise to the tournament title.
Junior Joe Weber finished second in the individual standings after carding a final-round 69. His 54-hole 210 bettered his career best 54-hole total by eight strokes. Weber finished in a tie with Bowling Green's Craig Pickerel. The duo finished two shots behind Longwood's Charles Shuford, who carded a 208.
Freshman Ted Gray made an impact in his collegiate debut. He finished in a tie for fourth, shooting a 213. He shot the tournament's best score, a 65, in the first round.
Junior Kyle Murphy also finished in the top 10. He shot a one-under, 215, to finish in ninth place.
Junior Steve Sass posted a 54-hole total of 220 to finish in a tie for 19th place. Sophomore Michael Bielawski made an impressive run on the final day, moving from 42nd to 22nd place. His final round 70 gave him a three-round total of 221 (+5).
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, Sept. 18 as part of the 13-team Northern Intercollegiate in Madison, Wis.
