MILWAUKEE ? Julie Thompson?s two goals led the Marquette (4-2-0) women?s soccer team to a 4-1 win over Wis.-Green Bay (2-3-1) at Valley Fields tonight.
Marquette was looking to score early as it controlled the ball for most of the first half. The Golden Eagles had seven shots on goal in the first half. Junior midfielder Lindsay Michuda scored the first goal for the Golden Eagles in the 30th minute.
Marquette was then able to attack and take some offensive chances as Thompson scored her first goal just four minutes later on a perfect cross from Ashley George.
Thompson?s second goal came on a cross from Heather Goranson in the 49th minute. Thompson beat a defender and shot from 18 yards.
?I thought our finishes were awesome tonight,? said head coach Markus Roeders. ?We created opportunities and I thought all four goals were great. Lindsay Michuda?s first was was perfectly placed in the far post and Julie Thompson?s second one topped that one.?
Marquette?s final goal came in dramatic fashion as Ashley Baird served a ball from 35 yards into the goalie box. Kristie Matola was able to get her head on the ball and directed it over a Phoenix defender and into the goal.
Dawn Detrie scored the lone goal for the Phoenix in the 72nd minute.
?We have been waiting for this for a while, we lost a little bit of our rhythm when we started making substitutions,? Roeders said. ?It is important to get everyone out there to play. We are pleased. We have been sitting for eight days and we were anxious to get out there and play a game. It is good to play this well against a team that can give you trouble.?
Marquette will open its Conference USA season Sunday at DePaul. Action begins at 2 p.m.
