MILWAUKEE ? Three Marquette players had 14 or more kills as the Golden Eagles (5-2) defeated Boston College (6-4), 3-0 (33-31, 30-24, 30-26) at the Al McGuire Center on the Marquette campus. The match was the second match of the two-day Howard Johnson Jesuit Joust.
Marquette was led by junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin, who had 18 kills. Coughlin also added 14 digs.
While Coughlin was impressive, it was a well-rounded Marquette attack that helped the Golden Eagles cruise to the win. For the match, Marquette hit a season high 29.4 percent ? 61 kills, 19 errors, 143 attacks. Freshman middle blocker Kimberley Todd had 14 kills for Marquette and led the team with a 54.5 attack percentage.
?You saw Kim Todd start to get it tonight,? head coach Pati Rolf said. ?She did a much better job of creating kills tonight, instead of just hammering the ball and hoping it would go in. She tried to hit lines tonight and that shows growth on her part.?
Down 25-21 in the final game, the Golden Eagles rallied to pick up the third game and claim the match. The Golden Eagles won game two by six points, but needed extra points to win the first game.
Senior setter Sarah Vernon had another all-around performance for the Golden Eagles with 49 assists, six kills and seven digs. Senior middle blocker Erica Heisser added 15 kills for Marquette. Katie Anderson led Boston College with 12 kills.
?Sarah did a great job of distributing the ball,? Rolf added. ?I was impressed with our serving and passing. They couldn?t get into their offense as a result.?
In the first match of the tournament, Loyola (Ill.) needed four games to defeat South Dakota State. Nicole Amberg had 24 kills and 21 digs to lead the Ramblers.
The tournament continues on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m. with Boston College taking on Loyola (Ill.). Marquette meets South Dakota State at 12:30 p.m. and takes on Loyola (Ill.) at 7 p.m.
