MILWAUKEE ? Marquette was faced with a tough task in its final match of the Howard Johnson Jesuit Joust. The Golden Eagles were faced with Loyola (Ill.) who entered the match riding a seven match win-streak. Loyola prevailed in three games, 31-29, 30-27, 30-26.
Marquette (6-3) held the lead early in game three. Errors allowed the Ramblers (8-3) to even the score at 20 and finish the game on a 10-6 run to claim the match. Marquette hit just 10.9 percent in the game, committing eight errors. For the match, the Golden Eagles hit 19.7 percent.
?When you play a team as good as Loyola, you can?t hit that low,? head coach Pati Rolf said. ?Our errors really cost us.?
Marquette was faced with a 2-0 setback by the mid-match break. Both games were tightly contested, but the Ramblers? consistency led them to the early lead. An 18.9 attack percentage in game one bettered Marquette?s 16.7 as the Ramblers won by two.
After spotting Loyola an early 6-1 lead, Marquette rallied and kept the second game close. The Golden Eagles were much more accurate in the second game, hitting 34.2 percent. Freshman outside hitter Kimberley Todd?s seven kills in the game paced Marquette's comeback, but the Golden Eagles couldn?t get closer than one point, falling 30-27.
