Coughlin, Vernon hit career milestones

MILWAUKEE ? The Marquette (7-3) volleyball team swept crosstown rival Wis.-Milwaukee (4-6), 30-26, 30-24, 30-21 at the Al McGuire Center as two Marquette seniors reached career milestones.
Junior Theresa Coughlin recorded her 1,000 kill and senior Sarah Vernon recorded her 1,000 assist. Coincidentally, Coughlin?s milestone kill came on Vernon?s milestone assist in the third game of the match.
The first game saw the Golden Eagles prevail 30-26, Vernon recorded 12 assists in that game while Coughlin added four kills. Wis.-Milwaukee stormed out of the gates, leading 5-1, but Marquette rallied midgame on a 6-1 run to take its first lead at 15-14.
Similarly, the Panthers took an early advantage in the second game but the Golden Eagles mounted a comeback halfway through the game and won it 30-24. Consistency was the key in the second game as Marquette hit 28.9 percent for the frame.
?The kids are really starting to settle in,? head coach Pati Rolf said. ?We?ve been gaining confidence with each match, even with the older players.?
Marquette didn?t hold anything back in the third game and was in control throughout, winning the game 30-21. Kimberley Todd added 12 kills in the win. Marquette continued to improve as the night went on, hitting 32.6 percent in the game. For the match, Marquette hit 26.6 percent.
?It definitely looked like Marquette wanted it more tonight,? said Wis.-Milwaukee head coach Kathy Litzau. ?They were more aggressive than us and played with lots of heart.?
The Golden Eagles will head to Storrs, Conn. To take part in the Husky Classic this weekend. Marquette will face Connecticut on Friday and Md.-Eastern Shore on Saturday before kicking off the Conference USA season at the Al McGuire Center on Oct. 1 against Cincinnati.
