STORRS, Conn. ? A slow start didn?t hamper Marquette (8-3) as it defeated Connecticut, 3-1 (27-30, 30-16, 30-15, 30-28). After dropping game one, Marquette outscored Connecticut 90-59 to earn the win.
A 30-27 loss in game one seemingly awoke Marquette as it limited Connecticut (4-5) to just 31 points over the two middle games. Marquette was especially dominant in the third game, hitting 30.3 percent.
The Golden Eagles started to gain control of the match tied at 12 in game two. At that point, Marquette went on a 32-11 run to close out game two and take a commanding 18-7 lead in the third game.
Marquette edged Connecticut, a future BIG EAST opponent, in game four, by a pair of points, but it was enough to give Marquette the win.
Senior middle blocker Erica Heisser and junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin led the Marquette attack. Heisser had 17 kills to pace the balanced attach, which had four hitters over 10 kills. Coughlin added 16 kills. Freshman outside hitter Kimberley Todd recorded 14 kills, her fourth consecutive match with 10 or more kills. Junior outside hitter Aga Niemcezewska had a season best 11 kills.
Senior setter Sarah Vernon logged her fifth double-double of the season, dishing 47 assists and having 16 digs. Coughlin also had a double-double, adding 14 digs. Senior Libero Erin Freer led the Marquette defense, which had 94 digs and eight blocks, with a team leading 26 digs.
The Golden Eagles? floor defense contributed to the Huskies? poor attacking day. Connecticut hit 4.8 percent for the contest and was led by Jamie Hadenfeldt, who had a match-best 18 kills. Marquette out hit Connecticut in the final three games, owning better attack percentages and more kills in the final three frames. For the match, Marquette hit 18.1 percent.
Marquette returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 as it takes on Md.-Eastern Shore at 7 p.m. (EDT) in Storrs, Conn.
