SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Marquette (4-5-0) was unable to respond to the high- power offense of No. 20 Stanford (7-2-0) as it dropped a 5-0 decision to the Cardinal today in the Santa Clara adidas Tournament.
"We just didn't put forth the type of performance we needed today," said head coach Markus Roeders. "We didn't resemble the team that we were Friday night (against Santa Clara). Friday we played at a high level, we played with urgency and determination. That is what you have to do against a good team like Stanford and Santa Clara. They are good teams and we needed to bring our "A" game, today we didnt do that."
Stanford scored its first goal when Gina Farias-Eisner and April Wall found Marcie Ward who headed the ball into the goal at 13:59.
Marquette went into halftime down 1-0 but Farias-Eisner scored an unassisted goal at 54:58 as the Cardinal took a 2-0 lead. Lizzy George scored on a corner kick from Amy Grady just five minutes later.
Stanford's scoring was rounded out by Katie Wayland at 70:13 and Grady at 80:44--a goal that was allowed by Jessica Zetlau. Zetlau and Katie Bissen shared goalkeeping duties today, Zetlau had one save in 9:50 and Bissen had four saves in 80:13.
"We made too many individual mistakes and that ended up costing us dearly," added Roeders. "We are disappointed with the result and the mistakes we made. We never could get a rhythm going today."
Bissen and midfielder Julie Thompson were both named to the All-Tournament Team today. Bissen recorded eleven saves over the weekend while Thompson led the midfield in the two games.
