September 29, 2004 - Greeted and cheered on by grand marshals Tom and Joani Crean, more than 17,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair participants turned out for the 2004 Al?s Memorial Run and Walk for Children?s Hospital last weekend.
"This is important because you're raising awareness, you're raising dollars and you're raising the level of intensity for what's a huge, huge issue, and that's to make sure that Children's Hospital is getting everything that it needs," Crean said. "If we're doing that, then I think we're accomplishing something."
Prior to the start of the race, members of the Marquette men?s basketball program spent time with the ?children?s champions? and then headed out on to the course to support the participants by handing out water.
A record 1,437 members from the Marquette Community participated and over $1 million was raised for the kids at Children?s Hospital through the event.
