The no. 21 uniform of Kathy Andrykowski will be retired in a ceremony at halftime of Marquette?s women?s basketball game with DePaul on Sunday, January 9 at 3 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center.
?This is an honor for Kathy and I?m thrilled that she?s being honored with this special day,? head coach Terri Mitchell said. ?She did so much as a player and she accomplished so much for this university. It?s a wonderful tribute that she is having her jersey retired.?
Andrykowski was a letterwinner at Marquette from the 1977 season to the 1980 season. Andrykowski finished her career as the program?s all-time leading scorer. She is currently eighth on Marquette?s all-time scoring list. She led her team in scoring three straight seasons and currently has three of the five best single-season scoring averages in school history.
She was a three-time All-Conference selection in basketball in 1977, 1978 and 1980 and served as captain during the 1978-1980 seasons. She was also selected as an all-region selection in 1980 by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
In addition to her scoring accolades, Andrykowski is fourth all-time at Marquette in rebounding and owns the top single season rebounding mark in the history of the school. She was also a four-time volleyball letterwinner, leading the team to a program best 35 wins in 1980. She was the recipient of the 1980 McCahill Award, presented to the Marquette senior athlete who demonstrated the highest performance in scholarship, leadership and athletics.
Andrykowski was inducted into the Marquette University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991 as the first female student-athlete inducted to the Hall of Fame.
?It?s a great honor once again,? Andrykowski said. ?There has been talk about retiring my jersey for many years and now that Marquette has a beautiful new facility, it?s a good time to do this. I can?t say enough how honored I am and to be the first one is an even greater honor.?
After her playing days at Marquette were complete, Andrykowski was drafted by the New York Stars of the Women?s Basketball League and played for the New Orleans Pride. She also played professionally in England, Italy and Spain. She served as an assistant volleyball coach at Marquette after her playing days were complete.
?I had a lot of fun being a student-athlete at Marquette and it offered me an opportunity to get a first rate education that I will always value,? Andrykowski added. ?I learned a lot, especially being a two-sport athlete, in terms of values, organizational skills and time management. But I never looked at it as a job. I had a great time at Marquette.?
Andrykowski is currently a senior project coordinator in the Pharmacology department at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
