MILWAUKEE, Jan. 7 -- Marquette junior Julie Thompson and sophomore Ashley George were both honored today by Soccer Buzz as members of the 2004 All-Great Lakes teams.
"Being selected among the elite players in the Great Lakes Region is a tribute to all of the hard work over the past couple of years," said head coach Markus Roeders. "Julie and Ashley both work hard and are deserving of these accolades."
Thompson earned second team honors as she led the Golden Eagle midfield all season long. She scored four goals and added five assists on the season as she played nearly every minute of every match. Thompson has been collecting accolades this post- season as she was named first team All-Conference USA, third team NSCAA All- Regional and named to the NSCAA Scholar All-Regional team.
George was a key part to the solid Golden Eagle defense in 2004 and had a breakout year last season. Starting all but one match, George helped Marquette's defense to surrender only 83 shots and 38 shots on goal during the ten game C-USA season. She also contributed on the offensive end, scoring one goal and notching four assists. George too has been collecting honors following the 2004 season, she was named second team All-C-USA.
"Julie had a great fall season for our team and it is nice that she continues to receive honors for her play," said Roeders. "We are also excited that Ashley was named to the All-Great Lakes Region Third Team. Considering Ashley had to redshirt her freshman year due to an ACL injury, we are pleased that she is healthy and finally getting back to playing at the highest level."
Fifty-four schools comprise the Great Lakes Region and from those schools, the voting was open to all Div. I head coaches and Soccer Buzz staff. For more information, please visit www.soccerbuzz.com.
