Uyenishi's Overtime Goal Pushes No. 11 Golden Eagles Past Syracuse, 2-1

The match was a tale of two halves, as the Orange (3-11-4, 2-5-3 BIG EAST) got on the scoreboard first, as Molly McManus collected a pass from Samantha Hawn in a scrum in front of the goal at the 36:45 mark. Marquette (15-2-1, 8-2 BIG EAST) head coach Markus Roeders thought that goal might have lit the collective fire in his team.
"Without taking anything away from Syracuse, I thought we played poorly in the first half." said Roeders. "We weren't winning balls in the air or on the ground. But for the last seven minutes, after they scored, we picked it up."
SU held a slight edge, 3-2, in shots in the first 45:00.
In the second half, however, the Golden Eagles awoke. Meghan Connelly and Michelle Pitzl both forced Orange goalkeeper Emily Kowalczyk to make two tough saves, while Julie Thompson hit the crossbar on a straightaway shot from 25-yards out. But Lauren Weber was able to find the back of the net, crossing her shot from right to the left post at the 70:37 mark to tie the match at 1-1. Her goal was assisted by Lindsay Michuda.
Four minutes into the extra frame, Marquette attempted a corner kick from the left side. Julie Thompson passed it into Kelly, who was able to cross it into the box where Uyenishi was able to get her foot on it and end the contest.
"In the second half, we were able to use more of the field and get our offense going." Roeders said. "It's our second straight overtime game, the second time it took a little longer to win, but we'll take it, especially with it being Senior Night. It's a special night for them, I'm happy that we were able to win."
Marquette outshot the Orange, 14-4, in the second half and, 17-9, overall for the match. In goal, sophomore Laura Boyer made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while her counterpart Emily Kowalczyk stopped seven shots.
The Golden Eagles close out regular season play on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Valley Fields when they take on St. John's. The match was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but was moved ahead an hour to accommodate the Syracuse/South Florida game, that was relocated to Milwaukee due to Hurricane Wilma. That match will begin at 10 a.m.
