Marquette's cross country teams competed at the 2005 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship this afternoon at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind.
The top two teams in nine regions around the country earn automatic berths to the NCAA Championship, held on Monday, Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. On Monday, 13 teams will be selected, at-large, to round out the 31-team national championship field.
The No. 29 ranked women's team placed sixth overall, totalling 208 points. Third-ranked Michigan captured the race, with 52 points, followed by No. 4 Notre Dame, Wisconsin, No. 22 Butler, and No. 30 Michigan State.
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Michaela Courtney, who finished in 26th place overall. She clocked 22:04.4 for the six-kilometer course. Heidi Lindeman crossed the line in 36th place (22:15.6), while Cassie Peller and Susie Emond were 39th (22:23.8) and 45th (22:31.9), respectively. Tara Hinke rounded out the MU scorers in 62nd place (22:53.5). Marquette's 1-5 spread was 49 seconds. Terri Emond (65th, 22:57.5) and Alli Sauer (104th, 23:35.8) rounded out the Marquette finishers.
"We certainly didn't run as well today as we did at BIG EAST's, but it was a solid performance." said head coach Dave Uhrich. "Based on our finishes all season long, I'm hoping that we'll be able to get into nationals with an at-large bid."
On the men's side, the Golden Eagles finished 20th overall, compiling 567 points. Wisconsin captured the team title, with 49 points. Kyle Saginus was the first MU runner to cross the line, in 69th place. He covered the 10-kilometer course in a time of 33:09.5. Jeremy Williams finished 92nd overall (33:51.2) and Drew Craig was 108th (34:14.5). Josh Pinter (140th, 35:17) and Scott Allen (158th, 35:46.9) rounded out the Golden Eagles finishers.
"This was one of those years for our men's squad." Uhrich said. "We redshirted our team MVP and were left with a young team that battled injuries throughout the season. That being said, we're looking forward to taking a big step next season."
