ST. LOUIS, Mo. ? A 13-0 run midway through the second half gave Marquette (17-9, 8-5 C-USA) a nine-point advantage and turned what was a close contest through the first 32 minutes into a Marquette victory, 70-56.
A three-point basket by Juedes at 3:13, who finished the game with 11 points, put the game away putting Marquette up 12. Christina Quaye led Marquette with her third double-double of the season, scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Carolyn Kieger scored 13 points. Mia Johnson led Saint Louis with 17 points.
A three-pointer by Rachel Diener brought the game back to a five-point Marquette lead with 8:09 remaining, but Saint Louis (3-22, 2-11) would get no closer.
The Marquette defense put the clamps on in the second half, limiting the once hot shooting Billikens to 29.2 percent in the second half. After Saint Louis hit 50 percent in the first half, they concluded the contest hitting 39.6 percent. Marquette held a significant rebounding advantage, 46-20, as part of the 14-point victory.
Saint Louis controlled the play for most of the first half, owning a lead of 21-17 with 7:51 to play. However, Marquette concluded the half on a 11-8 run to take the lead, 32-31 going to the break.
Quaye had nine points and four rebounds at the break. Kamm scored eight in the first half. Both teams were 3-for-7 from three point range. Johnson hit a pair for the Billikens to lead her squad with 12 points. Eight different SLU players scored in the first half as Saint Louis was 12-for-24 from the floor in the first half.
Marquette took its first lead of the half since 4-3 on a three-pointer by Kamm. That basket put Marquette up 25-24 and the lead was exchanged four more times before the end of the half.
Marquette concludes its regular season on Sunday, Feb. 27 at DePaul in Chicago, Ill. That game tips off at 2 p.m. and can be seen on the C-USA Television Network, airing locally on WMLW Ch. 41.
