The Golden Eagles have won eight of the last nine games with the Billikens, including this season?s first meeting. Playing without all-American point guard Diener, Marquette won a double-overtime thriller, 55-51, after rallying from an eight-point deficit with just over four minutes to play in regulation.
Junior Steve Novak connected on five three point field goals to lead all scorers in the game with 23 points. Since that time the 6-10 native of Brown Deer has averaged 17.9 points and is shooting 48.6-percent from three-point range.
Diener and Townsend enter Saturday?s game with 91 victories over their four-year careers. That is the fourth highest total by a four-year class in school history, trailing only the 101 victories produced by the classes of 1976 and 1977, 99 victories by the class of 1978, and the class of 1979?s 98 wins.
The Golden Eagles have secured the number nine seed for next week?s Conference USA Tournament in Memphis and will play in the opening round on Wednesday. Depending on the outcome of conference games on Saturday, Marquette?s opponent will be Memphis, TCU or UAB.
Opening round game times will be determined Saturday evening.
