Des Moines, Iowa- The Drake Relays is always a special event for not only the Marquette track and field teams but for also many other schools across the country. The meet continues to add to its legacy continuing the tradition of the special athletes who have participated in the events. Olympic greats Jessie Owens, Bob Hayes, Wilma Rudolph, and Michael Johnson have all competed in the prestigious meet. This year?s meet having started Wednesday with the first few events of the decathlon, goes throughout the weekend until its conclusion Saturday evening.
For Marquette, junior Susanna Emond finished the 10,000 meters in 36:11.41. Her run was good for fourth place and places her among the top seven competitors in Marquette history in the event.
Junior Matt Piekarski after the first two days finished third in the decathlon with 6852 points, breaking the school record of 6775 points held by current graduate assistant coach Nick Newton.
Also setting a school record on the day was the 4x1600 women?s relay team. Senior Brianna Dahm, sophomore Michaela Courtney, and freshmen Kaitlyn Chambers and Cassie Peller ran the race in 19:48.89 besting a previous record time of 20:12.48. For Dahm, she retained her name at the top of the list as the record they broke was from her relay team in 2001.
On Thursday as competition finished up it was obvious that the Golden Eagles and Coach Dave Uhrich were looking forward to a huge weekend. ?We should have some pretty good events Friday as well,? responded Coach Uhrich to the prospects of his team this weekend.
Obviously, coach is very proud of his team?s progress thus far this weekend. ?With the hundreds of teams here, just to place in the top eight at Drake is always something we are really proud of.?
The Drake Relays continue Friday and Saturday in Des Moines. As not all of the Marquette track and field members were able to make the trip, the remainder of the team is heading to the Illinois State Open on Saturday.
