Connelly, Goranson score in opening weekend
The Marquette women's soccer team played two 90 minute matches on Saturday, April 9, back to back at Valley Fields.
Marquette lost its opening match 1-0 to Northwestern. The Wildcats scored in the 75th minute on a header by Shannon Schneeman. The assist came of a corner kick.
In Marquette's second match of the day, the Golden Eagles tied Chicago Cobra Eclipse, 2-2. Marquette took a 2-0 in the first half on goal in the 18th minute by Meghan Connelly, who blasted a long range shot from 22-yards out. Heather Goranson increased the lead at the 30 minute mark on a finish from close range. The Eclipse tied the game with two second half goals.
Head coach Markus Roeders said the veterans dominated play and played very well. After changes were made later in each match to play those with less experience, the team lost its shape and were more exposed, making some mistakes.
Four players played in their first collegiate match after redshirting last fall ? Britni Benage, Aubry Trembly, Emily Fitzpatrick and Shaina Mango. Another four young players played very little last fall and saw numerous minutes ? Christy Smith, Meghan Garrity, Brittany Schlundt and Christy Zwolski.
"It was a good start to the outdoor portion of our spring season," Roeders said. "All healthy players saw extended playing time, and it was encouraging to see our younger players step up and get a true feel of the college game. The goal is to see individual improvement from the fall and get more comfortable as a team. We are excited about this group of players and our future in the Big East next fall. Although winning is important to us, the spring is used as a stepping stone for the fall and development is the key."
The Marquette women's soccer team is continuing the spring season on April 16, taking part in the "Kick Against Breast Cancer" in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., hosted by the University of Miami. The trip is a makeup of a trip that was cancelled in fall due to an approaching hurricane.
