Marquette downs Northwestern, 2-1
MILWAUKEE ? The Marquette women's soccer team defeated Northwestern, 2-1, on a goal and an assist by freshman Katie Kelly. With the win, Marquette improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2000 season, a year in which it went 20-3-1. As a result Marquette takes the championship of the 2005 Milwaukee Cup. Northwestern falls to 1-1.
"It's a great start to our season," head coach Markus Roeders said. "I'm proud of the way the team came out this weekend. Based on where we have been with some injuries, we had a number of people step up this weekend and play hard."
Kelly assisted on Marquette's first goal and scored the Golden Eagles' second, but it was Northwestern that jumped on the board first, scoring in the fifth minute. NU's Tabitha Lowey surprised Marquette with a 10-yard shot to the far post. Amanda Hoffman recorded the assist as the Wildcats dominated possession in those first four minutes.
That goal seemed to prove to be a wake-up call for the Golden Eagles. Marquette went on the offensive and attacked the Northwestern defense, scoring the equalizer just three minutes and 24 seconds later. Senior Julie Thompson recorded her first goal of the season. On the goal, Kelly recorded an assist as she played the ball in on a corner kick. She found senior Sarah Uyenishi at the top of the penalty area, who one-timed a short ball to Thompson, who ran on for the 14-yard shot past Northwestern's Whitney Jones.
"As soon as they scored, we got the ball, put in the center and went right at them" Thompson said. "We were very aggressive. Our teams in the past may not have done that."
Marquette kept the pressure on for much of the first half, recording seven shots in the frame. The Golden Eagles wasted little time to score the go-ahead tally. In the 18th minute, Kelly scored her first career goal, blasting a 50-yard effort that looped over Jones, who was playing out of the goal mouth, and into the upper far corner.
"(Roeders) is looking for me to attack from the back and it paid off," Kelly said.
"It was a great shot," Roeders added. "Their goalkeeper did play off her line and (Kelly) was about even with me. I told her to hit it, and she pulled the trigger."
The Golden Eagles had other opportunities as well. Junior Alison Loughrin was aggressive in her play drawing contact in the penalty area late in the first half, but her efforts weren't rewarded with a penalty kick. She also had an effort to the near post in the 41st minute that was saved by Jones.
Marquette's defensive efforts and ball control style of offense paid off in the second half, earning the Golden Eagles a victory. Junior goalkeeper Laura Boyer made five saves on the day. Roeders also lauded the play of his upperclassmen.
"Julie Thompson is playing like a senior. Heather Goranson is playing like a senior. Sarah Uyenishi is playing like a senior. Lindsay Michuda is playing like a senior," Roeders said. "Maybe it wasn't as pretty today as it was on Friday, but we didn't let anything get us down."
Thompson was named MVP of the Milwaukee Cup. Also on the all-tournament team from Marquette was Uyenishi, Boyer and Michelle Pitzl.
Marquette returns to action on Friday, September 7 at 7 p.m. against Drake at Valley Fields.
