Uyenishi earns Honorable Mention recognition
MILWAUKEE ? Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Boyer was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper-of-the-Week, the conference office announced.
Boyer picked up her first two wins of the season with Marquette victories over No. 13 Illinois and Northwestern. Boyer recorded three saves during a 1-0 shutout over Illinois to earn her second career shutout and first at Marquette. She also recorded five saves, allowing one goal in the Golden Eagles 2-1 victory over Northwestern. She was named to the All-Tournament team of the Milwaukee Cup.
"We're pleased for Laura," head coach Markus Roeders said. "She had a great weekend. In both games and came out with saves that proved to be the difference, especially at key stages in the game. She took the steps to come here and she didn't play much in the spring, but things are falling into place for her. To receive an award like this in the first week of the season will do a lot of confidence for her."
Senior defender Sarah Uyenishi was also honored by the BIG EAST with an Honorable Mention selection. She was integral to defending the attack of no. 13 Illinois in a 1-0 shutout on Friday.
"She did a lot this summer to be ready for her senior year," Roeders said. "She played a lot this summer, playing on the USASA national team and playing in the national club tournament. She sprained her ankle in the national championship game and came in less than 100 percent, but she played two 90 minute games and did the things she needed to do for us to win."
Marquette returns to action on Friday, September 2 at 7 p.m. against Drake at Valley Fields.
