Kelly named Rookie-of-the-Week, Boyer named to National Team-of-the-Week
MILWAUKEE ? A pair of Marquette women's soccer players received national honors this week. Freshman defender Katie Kelly was named BIG EAST Rookie-of-the-Week, while sophomore goalkeeper Laura Boyer was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll and to the Top Drawer Soccer national team-of-the-week.
Kelly scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift Marquette over Xavier, 2-1. It was her second goal of the season, as well as her second game-winning goal. Kelly also was part of a Golden Eagles defense that allowed one goal for the week. The Eagles shutout Wis.-Milwaukee (0-0 2OT) and Miami (Fla.) (1-0 OT), with the only allowed goal of the week coming in the victory over Xavier.
"This is a nice honor for Katie. She has made a quick adjustment to the college game," head coach Markus Roeders said. "She's doing a great job contributing, not just on defense, but on offense as well. She's another part of a defense that has done well so far this season."
Boyer earned two shutouts in 307 minutes of action over the week. She allowed just one goal in three contests, owning a 0.29 goals against average for the week.
"Being named to a national team-of-the-week, she has shown she is deserving of an honor like that," Roeders said. "She deserves a lot of credit for our start. She's an integral part of our defense. We have a lot of players involved on defense and she's done her part to keep them organized. She's confident and the rest of the team feeds off that."
Marquette, ranked as high as no. 14 by Soccer America, opens up BIG EAST conference play on Friday, September 16 at Valley Fields against USF. This is the first BIG EAST home contest in Marquette history in any sport.
