RICHMOND, Ky. - The Golden Eagles will continue is five-game road slant in Richmond, Ky., at the Nike/Comfort Suites Challenge hosted by Eastern Kentucky this weekend. Marquette will first play EKU at 7:30 p.m. EDT, Friday, Sept. 16, and will wrap-up the weekend against UNC-Greensboro on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. EDT.
?We are looking forward to traveling to Kentucky this weekend,? said head coach Pati Rolf. ?This tournament will not be easy, but we are excited to get back on track and play. We have had a good week of practice as our middles continue to improve. This will be a good weekend to prepare us as we head into BIG EAST competition next week.?
The Golden Eagles enter this weekend 5-4 after dropping three straight during its first road trip of the season at the Colorado Invitational. On Friday, Sept. 9, Marquette was shutout by third-ranked Stanford, 3-0. On Saturday, after being up 2-0 against Colorado, the Buffaloes rallied back and defeated Marquette, 3-2. The Golden Eagle?s third and final match of the weekend proved the same result as Marquette fell to Creighton in five games, 3-2. Senior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin, who was named to her third all-tournament team of the season, continues to lead the Golden Eagles with over 4.6 kills per game and averages 4.65 points per game.
The Colonels (5-3) enter the weekend riding an three game win streak which included wins against BIG EAST member Syracuse (3-0), Kent State (3-1) and Dartmouth (3-0) en route to the Kent State Invitational Title. Senior middle blocker Liz Guard and sophomore outside hitter Amy Arlinghaus were both named to the all-tournament team and Guard was selected as tournament MVP. Guard continues to lead EKU as she averages over four kills per game, while hitting over 35 percent and averaging over one block per game.
?Eastern Kentucky will be tricky?, explained Rolf. ?Syracuse took a game from Stanford, which is not an easy thing to do and EKU beat Syracuse 3-0, so this will not be an easy match for us. They are a very competitive team and we look forward to playing them.?
The Spartans (1-7) earned their first win of the season last weekend against Charleston Southern, 3-2, but hit a three-game skid against South Alabama (3-2), Stetson (3-0) and Campbell (3-0) heading into this weekend?s matches. Hilary Overby continues to lead the Spartans with 3.16 kills per game including a three-way team high 13 in the Spartans? win against Charleston Southern. This will be the first meeting between the Spartans and the Golden Eagles.
