MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Dominic James was named to the Collegehoops.net Preseason All-American First Team, and, combined with guards Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews, SI.com writer Luke Winn labeled the trio the fourth-best backcourt in the nation.
The Collegehoops.net All-American Teams were selected by writers and staff of the web site, and Luke Winn's Top 10 Backcourts were ranked by writers and staff of SI.com based on strength, noting that in many cases, the three position was considered part of the backcourt.
James, the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in 2005-06 and a unanimous choice for the Preseason All-BIG EAST team, is Marquette's leading returning scorer with 15.3 points per game a year ago. He led the team in assists in 2005-06 at 5.4 assists per game and he is the team's top returning rebounder at 4.5 per game. James was one of seven freshmen a season ago to average at least 11.0 points, 2.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. The point guard has also been named to the Rivals.com Preseason All-America First Team, to the Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team, and also to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50.
McNeal, an All-BIG EAST Rookie Team selection in 2005-06, averaged 11.1 points per game last season, third on the team. The sophomore also led the Golden Eagles with 64 steals, ranked second with 2.7 assists per game and was tied for second with 4.5 rebounds per game.
Matthews is Marquette's third-leading returning scorer with 9.0 points per game a season ago. In 23 games, the sophomore guard was second on the team, hitting 43.8 percent (14-for-32) of his shots from beyond the ark, and was third on the squad with 2.2 assists per game.
