ST. THOMAS, USVI - Entry 6 -- Tournament Reflections
Here we are in the airport getting ready to leave the Virgin Islands. It is bittersweet because who wants to leave sun and 85 degrees? One couldn't have scripted our time here any better. We did what we came here to do, win basketball games. At the same time we had fun. I think that the most important thing that came out of this trip was the way our team was able to focus on each opponent and improve with each game. We came out a better team. I was very impressed that our players' maturity throughout the trip.
After our win, Senior Vice President Greg Kliebhan treated our team, the entire travel party and Marquette faithful to a dinner boat cruise in the harbor. It was a lot of fun, just a great night. After our players devoured not only the appetizers, but the main course as well, we started dancing. I made the freshmen come up with me and dance, because well, they don't any better. Later, we tried to find the assistant coaches, but they were no where to be seen - and the boat wasn't that big! When they were found we started a conga line and everyone was up dancing. For those of you who weren't there, I wish you could have seen it. It was a great way to end the night and celebrate the championship.
Aside from winning, it was so awesome to have my family with down there. Having them down there and able to share Thanksgiving with us was so important because I don't get to see them often.
I would like to thank Monica (Executive Assistant) for organizing and managing everything on this trip. We didn't have to worry about anything. From transportation to and from games, to all of our meals; it was covered. We didn't have to worry about a thing. We are very lucky to have her.
I don't know what I would do with out assistant coaches on my staff. I am so lucky to have them. They tirelessly worked on scouting reports to prepare our team. After we would watch our game tape and I had long gone to sleep they were still up preparing. Andre Johnson, our film guy did a great job of getting the footage together we needed all week. All of our staff made sacrifices to ensure this trip was a success. I am so proud of their commitment to the program.
Now that we are leaving paradise I am so thankful for the time we had and the support of all the Marquette fans. We must continue this success into our upcoming games. We have two road games ahead that recharge for. First we play at Wis.-Milwaukee on Wednesday and then head to Texas to play Rice on Sunday.
