BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Marquette needed overtime in its third-straight contest, but got a goal from senior Sarah Uyenishi in the 97th minute to keep its unbeaten streak alive and defeat Miami (Fla.), 1-0. The Golden Eagles, ranked as high as no. 14 by Soccer America, improved to 6-0-1, the best start in program history, while Miami falls to 4-1.
"We won again," an excited Markus Roeders said. "We got a great performance today and played at a really high level. We played three games in the last five days, all of which were in overtime, and we played well to get the result. I'm proud of what they accomplished this weekend."
The Golden Eagles recorded the victory seven minutes into the first overtime session. Sarah Uyenishi scored her first goal of the season and Michelle Pitzl had the assist. The play started when freshman Katie Kelly, who scored the winner against Xavier on Friday night on a free kick in overtime, entered a free kick near the Miami goal. After the ball was cleared, junior Michelle Pitzl gathered the ball and played a cross to Uyenishi who scored.
"We're playing with a lot of confidence right now," Roeders said. "We created our opportunities, like when Michelle Pitzl served in a ball to Sarah Uyenishi in front of the net and she put it away."
Marquette's offensive effort proved to be solid all day. The Golden Eagles out-shot Miami, 17-11 on the day, including 4-0 in overtime.
The defense held its own as well. Marquette limited Miami to three shots on goal. When Miami did get shots at net, Marquette sophomore goalkeeper Laura Boyer proved to be up to the task, making three saves. The shutout was the third of the season for her.
As a result of the win, Marquette claims the championship of the Hoosier Classic. The tournament win is its second of the season, following up a win in the 2005 Milwaukee Cup to open the season. Four Marquette players made the all-tournament team, including senior Heather Goranson, who was tournament MVP. Also on the all-tournament team are senior Julie Thompson, Meghan Connelly and Pitzl.
"We weren't pleased with the way we played on Friday, but today we put in the effort that was needed to beat a good Miami team to win a tournament championship," Roeders said. "What we did today was incredible. Everyone from the top to the bottom of the team is pulling together, focused and excited. It's another step in the right direction."
The Golden Eagles, after playing five games in nine days, have a light week coming up. Marquette plays only once in the next seven days, but that contest is important. That match on Friday, September 16 against USF is the initial BIG EAST match for Marquette.
